Stubborn Man (Antigone)

from Through Another's Eyes - EP by Jeremy Francoeur

/

about

This tells the story of Antigone through the perspective of Haemon. He doesn't get much screen time, but has perhaps the emotional climax of the play where he goes to stab his father after the death of Antigone and decides to stab himself instead. His inner monologue and experiences throughout the play might be the most pitiable of all.

lyrics

I love my dad more than anyone
It’s a shame he can’t see what he’s done
Dad I don’t doubt your judgment, based on what you know
But citizens who aren’t your yes men cry, fearing the girl will go

Does that not trouble you so?

Can I ask
You put it in the past
Cause I’m hanging on by threadbare cloth
To my future of peace that lasts
I guess I can’t
You’ve drawn a permanent plan
No good son’s grace can ever erase
The statements of a stubborn man

He sent me away just like anyone
I may be young, but I’m still his goddamn son
I don’t understand how such a good man can put people through hell
Well if he wants Justice, he’ll have to lock me up as well

Does it not trouble him so?
Will he really just let me go?

Can I ask
We put it in the past
Cause I’m hanging on by threadbare cloth
To a future peace that lasts
I know I can’t
It’s such a permanent plan
No good son’s grace can ever erase
The statements of a stubborn man

There she is
A hanging symbol of
What it means
When someone takes and takes and never gives
What’ll you do now?
Will you hoist her up like a flag, neck swaying for a crowd?
Watch as the color drains out
Get high off the low blows you’ve passed around

What’ll I do, dad?
What’ll I do, dad?
What’ll I do with you?
I’ll slit your throat, blade a sharpened noose
You broke her spirit so I’ll break you in two
I’ll make you feel more than metaphorical attack
Cause you can’t bring her back

It won’t bring her back
It won’t bring her back
It won’t bring me back
It won’t bring me back
It won’t bring me what I lack
I’m done

Tell them all
I loved my dad more than anyone
